November is here and it is once again all about that often misunderstood human; the male of the human species. Men have a well-earned reputation of being somewhat cavalier regarding health issues, but more specifically about their own health issues and health risks. That’s what Movember is all about.
Having my own membership in the club hasn’t made me more empathetic towards some of my Bros. I became a believer long ago and I think I am tuned into what my body is trying to tell me as I age. Is it really too much to expect my fellow bros’ to get a check up once in a while? Most guys wouldn’t even think about skipping the annual check-up for their car and void the manufacturers warrantee in the process. But when it comes to our bodies, we choose to ignore some of the symptoms, or explain them away as something more benign or insignificant. Very man-like!
The fact is men are more likely to die from the illnesses our mo sistas would deal with early, and effectively. Mental illness is big for men too. We are more likely to suffer through mental illness rather than seek help. We are four times more likely to commit suicide compared to women and we are more prone to suffer through countless other physical symptoms in silence until wives, mothers and girl friends, all of our Mo Sistas, force us to act in our own best interest. That’s why our life expectancy is almost 5 years less than our mo sistas!
TRG is once again participating in Movember for better Men’s Health. Movember encourages men to join the movement by growing a moustache for the 30-days of November. These Mo Bros start the month clean-shaven, then grow and groom their Mo (slang for moustache), asking friends and family to donate to their efforts. With their new moustaches, these Mo Bros act as walking and talking billboards, bringing awareness to men’s health issues and prompting conversations wherever they go. In Canada alone, we raised a total of $146 million during Movember 2012 and Canada
Our goal at TRG is simply to make more of my Bros aware of our unique health issues and get them to act. We all need to start with an annual check up starting this Movember and hopefully long before our warrantee expires. You can visit our TRG Team page at http://ca.movember.com/team/1116109
My Bros thank you for your support!
